The population was 1,261 at the 2010 census,[1] down from 1,699 in 2000. The losses were due to extensive damage from hurricanes Rita and Ike in 2005 and 2008, respectively. It is part of the Lake Charles Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Hackberry is served by the Cameron Parish School Board. Hackberry High School, a primary and secondary school, serves Hackberry.
